We’re surrounded by invisible organisms in our environment called microbes.

These organisms are responsible for more products than we realize, including cheese, beer, and vaccines.

These microbes help us build Vivomer.

A proprietary material that is stable in use but biodegrades in the environment upon disposal.

True, natural circularity.

At end of life, the same microbes that made Vivomer view it as a nutrient-rich energy source, and enzymatically biodegrade it back into its natural constituents.

From, and back to, nature.

Naturally occurring microbes store energy in their cells as granules - similar to how human’s store fat.

We grow these microbes up in fermentation tanks just like you would brew beer or make cheese.

We then extract the granules from those cells and formulate them so that they’re manufacturable in traditional plastic equipment.

The result is packaging that is completely stable in use just like plastic.

Once you're done with your packaging, you can throw it away and microbes in the soil will consume and break it down, leaving nothing behind.

Flexibility

Just like plastic, Vivomer is available in rigid or flexible grades and can be tailored to meet specific needs in between depending on application. To date we’ve developed drop in grades for injection moulding, extrusion blow moulding and extrusion.

Barrier

Vivomer naturally has great barrier properties needing no additional coatings or barrier layers.  If required for specific applications, barrier properties such as water vapor transmission rates or oxygen transfer rate can be modulated.

Thermal Stability

Vivomer is thermally stable.  All of our products are tested through thermal cycles from -4C to 50C to ensure they remain stable through global shipping and storage conditions.

Color

Want a specific colour? Vivomer is colourable and we’ve developed a range of pigments and dyes to make sure colouration doesn’t effect end of life.  All our pigments vetted to be  petroleum free and ethically sourced.

Bespoke

We’ve explored a variety of other material properties, such as toughness, co-efficient of friction, or viscosity for specific applications. We have methodologies to control crystallinity, molecular weight or melt flow to ensure we can reliably create an application best suited for your function.

Biodegrade on demand
Put your empty Vivomer packaging in a home compost and it will biodegrade, without leaving any micro-plastics behind.
A majority of innovations for the plastic pollution crisis rely on industrial infrastructure to process them at the end of life. Consumers take on the burden of sorting their recycling, however, only 9% of plastics are effectively recycled with 12% being burned and the remaining 79% polluting our environment. If any of our materials reach marine or soil environments at their end of life, they will be broken back down into benign organic compounds.
Certified
Vivomer is verified with external partners for a number of end of life pathways. The most notable is all our materials are OK Compost HOME Certified by TUV Austria.
At Shellworks, we’re committed to providing our partners with current, scientific, and third party verified information. As we continue to develop materials and test them, we ensure that we provide updated information regarding our materials’ sustainability credentials.
